Dr. Hanan Balkhy on the Middle East War: Attacks on Water and Nuclear Sites Would Be a “Disaster”

GHealth News – The World Health Organization’s regional chief has issued a stark warning, labeling the current situation in the Middle East a “health crisis unfolding in real time.” Dr. Hanan Balkhy, WHO’s regional director for the Eastern Mediterranean, is calling for a total cessation of hostilities to prevent a complete systemic collapse across 22 countries and territories.

A System Under Siege

Dr. Balkhy emphasized that the devastation extends far beyond the immediate loss of life. The region is witnessing a historic collapse of healthcare access, with facilities no longer serving as the “safe havens” they were traditionally considered under international law.

The scale of the crisis is staggering, characterized by:

  • Mass Displacement: In less than a month, 3.2 million people have been displaced in Iran and over 1 million in Lebanon.
  • Infrastructure at Risk: Serious concerns have been raised regarding potential strikes accidental or intentional on nuclear sites and water desalination plants.
  • Environmental Catastrophe: Dr. Balkhy warned that attacks on oil or nuclear facilities could lead to rainwater contaminating vital underground water sources, creating a secondary disaster for survivors.

The Breaking Point of Humanitarian Law

The WHO has verified dozens of attacks on healthcare facilities across Lebanon, Iran, and Israel. A recent strike on the El-Daein teaching hospital in Sudan, which killed 70 people, including 13 children, serves as a grim example of the fading compliance with medical neutrality.

“In the past, people would go and hide in the hospitals because they were sure it would not be bombed. That’s not the case anymore,” Dr. Balkhy stated.

Long-Term Scars

Even if open hostilities were to cease today, the health repercussions will be felt for generations. The WHO is currently tracking a sharp decline in regional stability, noting three critical areas of concern:

  1. Maternal and Neonatal Health: Rising mortality rates due to a lack of sterile environments and prenatal care.
  2. Psychological Trauma: A burgeoning mental health crisis affecting all age groups.
  3. The “Lost Generation”: Thousands of children left orphaned and without access to education or basic vaccinations.

As the world’s focus shifts toward the escalating US, Israel-Iran conflict, Dr. Balkhy warned that ongoing crises in Gaza, Sudan, and Yemen are being dangerously neglected. Behind this “neglect,” she argues, lies unrecognised hardship and death that will persist long after the bombs stop falling. The only viable path forward is a significant and permanent de-escalation to secure the region’s medical future.
