GHealth News – The European Union is advancing a renewed vision for global health resilience through the EU Global Health Resilience Initiative, aiming to support stronger, more equitable, and sustainable health systems worldwide.
The initiative will be highlighted during a high-level side event at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81), where European and global health leaders will discuss how the EU can contribute to preparing health systems for future challenges, strengthening partnerships, and improving global health security.
The EU’s approach builds on the recognition that today’s health challenges are increasingly interconnected. Climate change, emerging infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, geopolitical instability, and pressures on health financing are creating new demands on health systems across the world.
Building Resilient and Sustainable Health Systems
At the heart of the initiative is the goal of supporting country-led health systems that can prevent, prepare for, respond to, and recover from health shocks while continuing to provide essential health services.
The EU aims to strengthen global health resilience by promoting:
- More coordinated global health governance and reduced fragmentation among health actors.
- Stronger primary healthcare systems and universal health coverage.
- Sustainable and innovative approaches to health financing.
- Improved preparedness for future pandemics and health emergencies.
- Greater investment in health infrastructure, innovation, and workforce capacity.
Global Health Leaders to Join High-Level Discussion
The “EU Powering Global Health Resilience” event will bring together senior representatives from governments, international organizations, development finance institutions, and the private sector to discuss how global cooperation and investment can strengthen health systems worldwide.
The opening session will feature Jozef Síkela, European Commissioner for International Partnerships, alongside Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) (confirmation pending).
The high-level panel discussion will include global health leaders such as Ambroise Fayolle, Vice-President of the European Investment Bank; Mekdes Daba, Minister of Health of Ethiopia (confirmation pending); Jorge Emilio Osorio, CEO of Vaxthera; Neale Richmond, Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora of Ireland; Joost Zuidberg, CEO of Cardano Development; and Matthias Berninger, Senior Vice President for Public Affairs at Bayer.
The event will conclude with remarks from Catherine Russell, Executive Director of UNICEF, and Commissioner Síkela, emphasizing the importance of sustained partnerships and investments to build health systems capable of addressing future global challenges.
